Simple Detection of Mercury Ion Using Dithizone Nanoloaded Membrane

چکیده
The simple Hg(II)-detection system was studied and developed using dithizone nanofiber loaded membrane. Dithizone is one of the most frequently used chemical substances for Hg(II) ions extraction in water. Hg(II)-dithizone complex substance [Hg(HDith)2] is stable in acidic condition and, presenting with the orange-brown color. To prepare dithizone nanoloaded membrane, dithizone solution (in acetone) was mixed in aqueous solution with vigorous stirring. After dithizone nanofiber dispersion was formed, the aqueous dithizone was filtered through the cellulose ester membrane. Adding ascorbic acid as a reducing agent during nanofiber preparation step and keeping dithizone membrane in aluminum bag with oxygen absorber under vacuum would improve the stability of dithizone against oxidation from air and/or light. The Hg(II)-detection was performed by simply filtering solution through the dithizone membrane and, then, quantitatively analyzing by the colorimetric equipment. It was found that the concentration range of Hg(II)detection can be altered with sample volume. By this technique, the detection limit can be achieved as low as 0.057 ppb with sufficient precision and repeatability. Practically, it could be applied to Hg(II)-determination in real samples from environment such as artificial waste water, river water and sea water.

Flotation-spectrophotometric determination of mercury in water samples using iodide and ferroin.
This paper describes a simple and highly selective method for separation, preconcentration and spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of mercury. The method is based on the flotation of an ion-associate of HgI4(2-) and ferroin between aqueous and n-heptane interface at pH 5. The ion-associate was then separated and dissolved in acetonitrile to measure its absorbance. Quantitative flo...

THE LOSS OF MERCURY due to volatilization and incomplete removal of oxidizing agents which destroy dithizone are among the major problems in determining mercury in urine. This paper describes a method by which these difficulties are reduced to a minimum. In actual use, this method has been found efficient in screening large numbers of workers exposed to a mercury hazard. Most methods require a ...

The present communication is concerned with the determination of mercury in biological materials and its normal excretion in humans. As a preliminary step in the determination of mercury in biological materials, destruction of the organic matter is essential. Mercury has a high degree of volatility and hence precautions are necessary to prevent losses during this process. There have been many c...
